The employee offboarding process should be as polished as any other program throughout the employee lifecycle. Many of your departing employees may become "boomerangs." And, all of your departing employees can become referrals, positive or negative, for your organization. Sending employees off on the best note possible is a smart course of action. Plus, a well-oiled offboarding practice will protect your company against security breaches, lost equipment, and the like. To assist in this endeavor, Talent Alchemists is providing a free, downloadable employee offboarding checklist, organized by corporate function. You can find the link below.
Checklist best practices
Typically, the People Ops department isn't the only team involved in offboarding. IT, Finance, Facilities, and others may all get in on the action. To efficiently share the Offboarding Checklist among all the players, I strongly suggest you upload a copy, for each departing employee, in a shared workspace.
Additionally, a checklist "owner" should be assigned - probably someone from HR - to ensure the document is shared in a timely manner and all tasks are monitored and completed.
This checklist does not get specific about any local, state or federal employment laws, so do not use the document to establish your legal practices. Be sure to research laws impacting your organization on final paychecks, PTO payouts, required notifications, etc. SHRM is always a great place to start your research. Of course, reach out to an employment attorney to confirm you are handling terminations in a legal manner.
Of course, it should go without saying, edit this document so it best suits the needs of your department(s) and company.
